Charles Ray Chubb

Charles “Chuck” Ray Chubb passed away, Wednesday, August 18, 2016, at DePaul Hospital. Charles was born on April 18, 1931 in Springfield, Missouri, to Prosser and Hattie (Broad) Chubb. He graduated from Senior High School, Springfield, Missouri in 1949. He earned a B.S. in Engineering Physics at the University of Illinois, Urbana in 1953. This was followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1958 and 1963 respectively. Charles married Jeanne Marie Ropper and they had four children, Alan, Paula, Tom and Lisa. Chuck enjoyed his time spent with his family. He liked camping with the Boy Scouts, family vacations, searching for unique rocks and minerals, breeding freshwater fish, raising pets, and later traveling to see his children. He also traveled to Frankfurt and Heidelberg Germany with his son, Alan, where he was able to practice the German language he learned at the university some 45 years earlier. He truly enjoyed helping his children, grandchildren and many friends with their classwork. While he attended the University of Missouri he spent summers working at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis. Upon graduating in 1963, he worked full-time with McDonnell Douglas, which later merged with Boeing. During his career, he had numerous research and management positions. He started working in space projects in 1957 and worked in the Gemini and Skylab programs until the mid-1970s. The remainder of the 1970s included work with electronics, integrated circuits, electromagnetics, and optics. His work with optics continued through the 1980s with projects including optic demultiplexers, GaAlAs arrays, guidance systems, lasers, and laser diodes. Upon retirement from McDonnell Douglas he worked as an optics consultant for Storz Ophthalmic Instruments for eye surgery. This was the beginning of his 25 year passion for medical research which would benefit mankind. Throughout his retirement years, he bought and managed houses for rental properties half of the time and spent the other half of the time doing medical research at Washington University Medical Library. His particular area of interest included cancer research. He evaluated data to find the causes of cancer and ways to mitigate them. He studied the medical uses of X-rays and was passionate about the pros and cons of using X-rays and their long-term effects on people. He had multiple patents, published articles in technical journals, and gave professional, technical presentations. Survivors include his 4 children, Alan, Paula, Tom, and Lisa, 13 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. Charles also took care of many close friends and welcomed them into his family especially Tammy Kuhn, her daughter and 3 granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, his former wife, Jeanne, and his brothers Robert and James, and sister, Dorothy Jean. We were blessed to have a father who truly loved his family and friends and gave so much of his time and energy to help those in need.
