Verla V. DeBeer

Verla Virginia DeBeer 1921-2017 Verla Virginia DeBeer, age 95 of Florissant, passed away at her home Tuesday, June 6, 2017 surrounded by her family. Beloved wife of the late Wayne DeBeer; loving mother of Susan (husband Tom) Fleming, Ken (wife Kathleen) DeBeer, Doug (wife Patty) DeBeer, Rich (wife Laurie) DeBeer; loving grandmother of Johnathan Arcos, Christopher and Alexander DeBeer, Greg (wife Mandee) DeBeer, Jeff (wife Ashley) DeBeer, Heather Guittar, and Amy Sciuto, and Nick DeBeer; loving great-grandmother of Henry, Teddy, and Pearl DeBeer; beloved sister of Bee Stewart, the late Robert Kallemeyn, the late Margaret Kallemeyn; and friend of many. She was born on August 21, 1921 in Steen, Minnesota to Martin and Florence Kallemeyn. She earned her Bachelors of Nursing Degree from the University of Iowa, and then proceeded to join the Army; serving as a nurse during WWII. As an Army nurse she served in the European, African, and Middle Eastern Theaters. She was awarded the Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service Star, as well as the World War II Victory Medal. She was stationed in England during D-Day, aiding med-evacuated soldiers returning from Normandy and other invasion areas. After the war she met Wayne DeBeer in Little Rock, Iowa and later the couple was married the 29th of August, 1946. Together they raised a family throughout Iowa and later settled in the Saint Louis area. She was a member of the Glasgow Village Presbyterian Church and John Knox Presbyterian Church for many years, and always enjoying singing in the choir. She volunteered at the Saint Louis Zoo for 25 years. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Funeral services for Verla will be at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Hutchens Mortuary. Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the funeral home. Internment will proceed at 8:45 a.m. from Hutchens to Jefferson Barracks for a 9:30 a.m. graveside service Friday, June 9, 2017.
