Rev. Sheryl S. Cross

Rev. Sheryl S. Cross Born August 17, 1952, died at home peacefully August 7, 2014 at the end of a twenty-year battle with Cancer just short of her 62nd birthday. Beloved wife of Daniel R. Cross; loving mother of Rev. Laura Blanco (Alex), Sarah Cross (Zeta), and Kit Franks (Josh); daughter of Norma and the late Edgar Thies; sister of Dave Thies (Fran), Darrell Thies (Cindy) and Dr. Phyllis Thies Martinez (Walter). Rev. Sheryl Cross was an ordained minister with the United Church of Christ, former Deaconess Parish nurse and former Associate Director of the International Parish Nurse Resource Center. As a true Deaconess, Sheryl had an appreciation of the connection of Mind, Body and Spirit. It was her lifelong pursuit to serve by caring for others whether it be through faith or healing. She had a strong belief that miracles were everyday events and a part of the many healing traditions of the world. Sheryl was extremely grateful for the medical care she received. At the same time, she was frustrated with care revolving around aspects of orthodox medicine. Her best care came from those who saw the limitations of orthodox medicine and went beyond. Such as the Patient Empowered model of Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) in Philadelphia which included naturopathic support; Integrative Medicine of Dr. Simon Yu which includes Acupuncture Meridian Assessment; and the advances in research and natural medicine within the U.S. and around the world which continue to be ignored by the orthodox methods of the FDA. During Sheryl’s life, she served many years as Girl Scout leader and American Red Cross Canoe, CPR, Community First Aid Instructor and Instructor of Instructors. She also served multiple summers as camp nurse for at-risk-youth at Sherwood Forest Camp. Executive Director Mary Rogers reflects on Sheryl’s devotion as the primary provider of health care and mother to the camp. “Sheryl’s response to the call to serve exceeded the high standards of the job in the way (she) was most suited, as a woman, as a mother, as a nurse.” Sheryl’s leadership helped pass the resolution within the United Church of Christ (UCC) in 1997 reclaiming the church’s ministry of health and healing. In nearly 40 years of marriage she exemplified the best of a partner in life, complimenting and collaborating with her husband, to provide a nurturing atmosphere for her family and empowering her daughters to thrive. Services: Visitation 4-8 p.m. Fri., Aug. 15 and 10-10:30 a.m. Sat., Aug. 16 at Immanuel U.C.C. Church, 221 Church St., Ferguson, MO 63135. Celebration of Life service 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. No gladiolus please. Contributions can be directed to Immanuel United Church of Christ in Ferguson to the Sheryl Cross Cancer Research Fund. They will be directed to the FDA approval process for Cancer Treatment known as 3BP.
