Robert L. Bretz

Bretz, Robert Lawrence Fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church on Friday, September 30, 2016, and passed on October 1, 2016 at age 92. Beloved husband of Anna Marie (Higgins) Bretz, loving father of Mark (Gail) Bretz, Jill (Robert) Westholt and Brian (Tammie) Bretz; loving grandfather of Matthew Bretz, Andrew (Lisa) Bretz, Anthony (Jamie) Bretz, Jaimie (Nick) Spiro, Ryan Westholt, Shane Bretz, Aaron Bretz and Megan Bretz; loving great-grandfather of Madison Bretz, Jaxson Westholt and Olivia Bretz. Beloved son of the late Henry Bretz Sr. and the late Stella Gissy Bretz; beloved brother of Eugene Bretz and preceded in death by brothers and sisters Glennon (Lois) Bretz, Constance (George) Reisel, Henry Bretz Jr. and Jane (Donald) Humphrey; loving brother-in-law of Dorothy Gorman, Paul Horn and Elaine Horn, and Shirley Bretz. Loving uncle and great-uncle to his many nephews and nieces, and faithful friend to many others. Bob was a veteran of World War II, injured in combat on a battlefield in France in July 1944, honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in August 1945. He was a recipient of a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star medal, the Knight of the Legion of Honor medal from the Republic of France and a European African Middle Eastern Theater ribbon. Bob spent nearly 40 years working at the Federal Records Center in St. Louis. He was devoted to his family and was a fun-loving, good friend to many throughout his life. He was a kind and generous soul, establishing savings accounts for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed vacationing with his family for several years at Pawley’s Island in South Carolina and before that at the Lake of the Ozarks, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. He and his love and sense of humor are missed already by his loving family, who cherish the memories of a life well lived and are grateful for the time he shared with all of them. Services: Hutchens Mortuary, 675 Graham Road in Florissant on Wednesday, October 5, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral service at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 6 at St. Norbert Catholic Church in Florissant, 16455 New Halls Ferry Road, followed by burial at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
