The Rev. Dr. Herbert E. Hohenstein (asleep in Jesus) on Monday, June 9, 2014. Survived by Ruth (nee Grotelueschen), his loving wife of 62 years, seven children, Cheryl (Dr. Raymond) Mastrovito, Laurie (Rev. James) Schack, Rachel Speed, Mark (Allie) Hohenstein and Thomas (Beth) Hohenstein, Elizabeth (John) Graef, Sarah (Major Joseph) Spiess, 17 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Walter and Laura Hohenstein and one sister, Luella Hohenstein. Our dear brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend. Pastor Hohenstein answered God’s call and became a Lutheran pastor, following in the footsteps of his father and his grandfather. After graduating from Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Clayton, he served as an instructor of Biblical Hebrew at the seminary; he served pastorates in three congregations, Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Richmond Heights, MO, Faith Lutheran Church in Inglewood, CA and Unity Lutheran Church in Bel-Nor, MO. After his retirement in 1994 he served as Pastor Emeritus at Unity Lutheran Church until his death. He received an MA in Classics from Washington University in 1955 and a doctorate in Hebrew Scriptures from Concordia Seminary in 1967. He taught courses in Preaching and Biblical Interpretation at both Concordia Seminary and Christ Seminary-Seminex. He wrote a number of religious books and contributed homilies to various sermon publications. Pastor Hohenstein also served on local Lutheran charitable organizations, including Lutheran Mission Association and Good Samaritan Center for the Homeless. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Luke's Hospital, Division 7700 for their excellent and compassionate care. Friends may pay their respects at Hutchens Mortuary, 675 Graham Rd., Florissant from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 13, 2014. The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Unity Lutheran Church, 8454 Glen Echo Dr, Bel-Nor, 10:30 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at St. Trinity Cemetery.
