Nicholas Peter Piccione

Nicholas Peter Piccione Born in St. Louis, Missouri, to parents Paul and Grace (nee Viviano) Piccione, Nick Piccione was proud to be part of a large extended Italian-American family. Nick was a devoted husband and father. He was married to Joan (nee Funsch) Piccione for 58 years. Nick graduated from St. Louis University High School (1948), and earned a degree in Marketing from St. Louis University (1952). After completing the ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) during his university years, he received a commission as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served his country in Korea. When the Korean War ended, he was sent on temporary duty with the Navy and served on the aircraft carrier Lake Champlain in the South China Sea. After his military service, Nick returned to St. Louis and ultimately built a successful career with New York Life Insurance selling Group Insurance. He was also involved with several family enterprises, including owning and operating motion picture theaters. In 1981, a promotion with the company took Nick, Joan and their five children to Grosse Pointe, Michigan. He later retired from New York Life as Field Vice President. Nick transitioned to retirement with the same enthusiasm and energy that he brought to everything. He was President of the Grosse Pointe Rose Society (where he won several awards for his roses), was active with the Grosse Pointe Men’s Tennis Club and sang with the Grosse Pointe Barbershop Harmony Society. Nick and Joan also enjoyed power boating and were members of the Grosse Pointe Sail Club. Committed to giving back to his community, Nick served as a volunteer with the St. Vincent DePaul Society (St. Ambrose and St. Clare of Monetfalco Conferences). He was also a volunteer with the Dominican Literacy Center. Nick is survived by his wife and children Lisa (Kate Lang), Steven (Cheryl), Nicholas (Sherry), Eric (Cathi) and Maria (Kevin McAvoy), 11 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, his brother Peter (Nancy) and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 16, 2016 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 7148 Forsyth Boulevard. Family and friends will gather at 10:00am, with a funeral mass at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St Ambose Conference of the St Vincent DePaul Society.
