Janet L. Menefee

Janet L Menefee was born in St Louis on October 30th, 1924 to Matthew and Lillian Curtis. She graduated from Normandy High School and subsequently employed by the San Francisco and St Louis (Frisco) Railway during her twenties. During this time (1940's & early 1950's) she met and married her husband Gerald W. Menefee. They had two boys Gerald William Jr. and David Curtis. She was a devoted wife and homemaker. Family was very important to her and in later years, spent some time researching her genealogy. She was related to the family, Musick. In addition, Janet was fond of working in the garden and planting flowers over the years. She was an excellent baker, (pies may have been her specialty); she was an active and long time member of Faith Lutheran Church, and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd after the closing of Faith Lutheran. Janet enjoyed traveling and seeing new places. Perhaps her favorite activity was reading - she loved to read. She held a high appreciation for classical music and plays/musicals; her favorite music however, was that of Gershwin. She enjoyed going for walks and spending time talking with loved ones. Her faith was very important to her and she loved her church family. She was known to always have an even temperament and calm demeanor. "She was one of the sweetest mother-in-laws anyone could ever have.", says her daughter-in-law of almost 26 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Matthew and Lillian Curtis, her wonderful husband Gerald, (April 1983) and her grandson, Gerald William, III ("Will"). Janet is survived by her two sons, Gerald W. Menefee, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Barbara, of Kansas City, MO and David C. Menefee of Florissant, MO; granddaughter Jennifer Menefee of St. Louis, MO; grandson, Clay Menefee of Kansas City, MO and one great granddaughter, Amanda Bles. She made the best of every situation. During her time in assisted living, she enjoyed playing Bingo; so much so that it became a very important part of her routine. She spent just under 10 years in either assisted living or nursing home care. Her nurses knew her well and commented about her gentleness and consistently sweet nature. She was content with herself and led a simple, quiet and devoted faith. She was a beautiful example of a follower of Jesus Christ. Mom, you will be missed by all who shared your love. Visitation 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9 at Hutchens Mortuary. Funeral service 1 p.m., Friday, January 10 at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Hazelwood, MO. There will also be a brief visitation at the church from 12:30 to 1 p.m. on Friday. Memorials may be made to Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Hazelwood, MO or to the charity of one's choice.
