Donald R. Young

Young, Donald R., Asleep in Jesus, Sunday, September 28, 2014. Don was the beloved brother of Norman (Carol) Young and Doris Hewkin, an uncle, great uncle and great great uncle, cousin, step-father and good friend. After graduating in 1952 from Washington University in St. Louis, Don was sworn into the United States Navy as an "officer enlisted candidate." He received his officer's commission in January, 1954. Don was a member of the Navy Civil Engineering Corps which is responsible for construction and maintenance on naval bases and also provides officers for the Navy "Seabees." He served two years at the Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, Mississippi. He then served a year in South Korea as a Public Works Advisor to the Korean Navy, where he was also responsible for the Armed Forces Assistance Korea, providing material to civilian projects. Don was released from active duty, January, 1957, and joined the reserve Seabees units in St. Louis and later in Cape Girardeau for a total of twenty years. He retired from active naval service in 1978 with rank of full commander. He was honorably discharged in 1990. In 1968, Don joined the Civil Air Patrol in Metropolis, Illinois, and completed his pilot license that same year; he also bought a Piper Cherokee 160 airplane in 1968. He continued in the CAP in Arkansas and Overland Park, Kansas. In 1972, Don sold the Cherokee and bought a Piper Comanche 250 which he flew the next 21 years. In 1996, he moved back to the St. Louis area and continued in the Civil Air Patrol until he retired after 36 years in 2004. With a Masters degree in chemical engineering, Don worked many years for Missouri Portland Cement Company. He also worked for Ash Grove Cement Company. Funeral service for Don will be at 11 a.m., Monday, October 6, 2014, at Blessed Savior Lutheran Church, Florissant. Interment, National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks MO. Memorials appreciated to Blessed Savior Lutheran Church or the charity of donor's choice. Visitation will be at Hutchens Mortuary, Florissant, from 3 until 7 p.m., Sunday, and at Blessed Savior Lutheran Church from 10 until 11 a.m., Monday.
