Charles H. Rohde

Rohde, Charles Herman, 93, of Florissant, MO. Fortified with the Sacraments of the Church on January 11, 2016. Born August 10, 1922 in St. Louis, MO. Beloved husband of 61 years to the late Elizabeth Rohde (nee Quirk); loving father of Chuck (Terry) Rohde, Cathy (Gerry) Wombacher, Steve (Diane) Rohde, Greg Rohde, Marcia (Ovidiu) Maris, and Paul (Linda) Rohde. Dear grandfather of 12, great-grandfather of 16, brother-in-law, cousin, uncle, great-uncle, great-great-uncle, and devoted friend to many. “Charlie” enriched every life he touched. Charles received the Bronze Star medal for valor on D-Day. Serving in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, he earned rank of Technical Sergeant with the 467th Anti-Aircraft Artillery, Automatic Weapons Battalion, which suffered heavy casualties on Omaha Beach the morning of June 6, 1944. They were successful in neutralizing key enemy strongholds, and a plaque in Colleville-sur-Mer honors the 467th. “Pax Vobiscum.” Charles earned five battle stars and the Bronze arrowhead for combat in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He received the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatre of Operations medal, the WWII Occupation medal, and the WWII Victory medal. In 2011, he was knighted by France with the Legion of Honor medal. Charles was the 2012 Veterans Day honoree by the Missouri Athletic Club and 2014 Veterans Day honoree by the St. Louis Blues. Charles graduated from McBride High School in 1940 and joined International Shoe Company. After the war, he earned a Bachelor of Science-Commerce degree from St. Louis University. After 49 years of employment with ISCO, he retired as vice president-comptroller. Charles was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Fatima, later St. Rose Philippine Duchesne in Florissant, coaching sports, serving in the men’s club and as an usher. He enjoyed teaching his children to fish, and was an active leader in the Boy Scouts. In recent years as a resident of Garden Villas North, he enjoyed playing bridge, pinochle and poker. Services: Visitation will be held 3pm – 8pm Monday, January 18 at Hutchens Mortuary, 675 Graham Road in Florissant. 9:30am funeral will be held at St. Rose Philippine Duchesne on Tuesday January 19. Charles' final resting place will be Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please offer Mass intentions at St. Rose Philippine Duchesne or make a contribution to the National WWII Museum.
